Definition Key

CREDIT:  What you get when your own goods and/or services are requested.

DEBIT:  The opposite of CREDIT – when someone else provides goods and/or services to you.

BEST ACCOUNT BALANCE:  Your best account balance when trading should be on the credit side. This means you have a profit.  However, your debit balance is not a negative to the service.  This means that you have been active, and is your promise to remain active by providing your goods or services when they are requested.

Member: a single person (from 12 to 112 years old), business or agency that has placed a listing offering goods or services for Barter.  Each member agrees to accept CREDIT for full or part payment for the goods and/or services that they have listed. It is up to the member to decide how much CREDIT they accept for their goods and service.

Initial Registration:  No charge – new members are credited 100 Talents to their account and may begin trading right away.

Renewals: All renewals are subsequently assessed on an annual basis at $12 per year.

Placing a Listing:  When you place a listing in the Barter Bulletin, you agree to honor and accept Barter Trade for part or full payment of goods and/or services you are listing. You must live within the local calling distance of the city of Edmonton and we ask that you reasonably expect to live in the greater Edmonton area for at least six months. You also agree to contact the LETS Edmonton Trade Community if you move or your telephone number changes.

Making a Trade:  Transaction values are kept in balance at the administration office.  To receive credit, the “seller” and “buyer” contact the office with transaction details.  Depending on the trade levels for businesses, it is advisable to provide details of all transactions with each member to the office no later than every other Wednesday.

CONFIDENTIALITY:  Under no circumstances does the LETS Edmonton Trade Community share its database of information with anyone or any organization.  All contact information is used only for tracking transactions and communicating with members.

Administrator:  Is also responsible for conducting the daily business of the Barter service with support of the Coordinators. It is the preference of this network that the Administrator registers themselves as a barter member.

Coordinator:  Highly valued volunteers who agree to serve 12-month terms to act on the Board of Directors. They may also guide the trade system through with the goal of helping create a vibrant trading community – also attract new members and alliances to the community.

Annual Trade: projected to be $7,500 amongst members for year 2001-02 of operations.

House Account:  Trade credit equal to 10% of the total annual Trade value conducted by members.  The Credit is used for the Barter Service operational costs. This would include payment for: printing, promotions and advertising, or other operational costs that the committee may see fit.

Talents:  The unit of barter trade measurement.

Inventory:  The types of goods and services available to members for Trading.

Barter Bulletin:  Regularly issued to publish the Trade Offers and Requests of our members.  A supply is available at the Beverly Towne Community Development Office, our PotLuck Socials and from members.

PotLuck Socials: Where all members come to trade products and/or services and share a laugh or two.  The Beacon Heights Community League Hall (4418 – 118 Avenue, Edmonton) is currently hosting our PotLuck Socials.  Volunteers help with set up and clean of the hall.  Members may register to have a table and conduct trades - current issues of the Barter Bulletin are also circulated.  If Attendees are able, they are requested to bring a supper/dinner food dish for a family of four (along with condiments).  Label your serving dishes or bring disposables.  Attendees provide their own plates and cutlery for the meals.
